December 30, 2020

Martha Hauptman writes:

Our classmate Barbara Greifer Kane passed away peacefully on December 30th after more than a yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer. I lost a good friend whom I met in 1955 when we were teenagers at Bronx High School of Science. We then went to Barnard together and stayed friends until the day she died. Barbara was an accomplished executive who became a Managing Director at Citibank. As such she traveled the world and lived for some time in Paris and London. Most of all, she delighted in her two young granddaughters, Florence who will turn 5 in March and Cecilia 3 in August. Despite Covid they spent happy times together in her Southampton home. Her son Alexander was a regular companion for the NY Knicks basketball seasons over the years. A big supporter of the Manhattan Theatre Club, Barbara was generous and loved taking friends to their productions. After retiring, Barbara worked as a volunteer with the organization Community Service Society of New York (CSSNY) where she helped low income New Yorkers get through the bureaucratic mazes of life, in particular getting health coverage. She continued doing this volunteer work even in this last year of treatments for her own illness. People she worked with there as well as those at CITI had only the kindest loving words to say about her. Hearing words of remembrance from those who worked under her at CITI, I would say she was a "beloved boss." For many of us, she was a beloved friend.
